The Intentional Fallacy

I overslept this morning and missed my chance to swing by campus and talk to Dr. Burgess about cutting into his History of Rome class. I did manage to redo my car registration as well as swing by work to pick up and cash my paycheck. Then I went over to my parents house to give them the money for registration and use their credit card to pay online rather than wait in line for a c ouple of hours. Plus, they wanted me to drive my grandmother to her doctor's appointment and then take her home.

Well, after I entered all the information online and printed my father the receipt he tells me in a deadpan voice that he gave me the wrong credit card. The way he sounded I thought for sure that he was joking. But, no, he wasn't joking. So, I ended up waiting for 30 minutes on hold when I called the Bursor's office. The whole time my father keeps asking me what they are saying, do I hear music, what does the message say. It's insane. Then I finally get a person. I explain that I entered the wrong credit card and would like them to cancel the transaction so I can use a different credit card. The lady exlaims, "Ewwwwww. I don't know about this. One moment while I talk to my supervisor."

After a five minute or so hold the lady returns and informs me that she needs to transfer me to her supervisor. She gives me the name of the supervisor and her phone number in the event of being disconnected. That was nice I thought. Another five minutes or so on hold and then someone picks up.

"Bursor's office, how may I help you?"

What?! "Uhm, I was being transfered to a supervisor, Mrs. F----."

"One moment" Click Then I was back in the initial phone menu!

Fuck. So hang up and call back the number that the first lady gave me. There's a recording that the number has been disconnected. I look her up on the University's online directory only to discover that her listed phone number is the same as the Bursor's Office. That means in order to contact her I'll have to go through the voice menu thinggy and then wait to be transfered again.

Luckily my father was getting antsy so instead I drove him to his bank so that he could simply transfer the funds around to cover the gaff. Then we drove by the mechanics to pick up his car which had been in the shop.

As a side note. My car needs to go back into the shop again. On the first leg of taking my grandmother home my car did fine. Then we stopped in Greeneville to get something to eat. That's when disaster struck. After that my car would make this sound when I tried to go above 55 that sounded as if my car was in park and I had the accelerator mashed to the floor. It gradually would go above 55, but very slowly. Then once I dropped her off and headed back home the car refused to go above 55 altogether. I ended up driving it in drive2. Even then the repaired thermostat acted funny. While in drive2 the thermostat read as if my car was loosing heat rather than heating up.

My concern is that it is a transmission problem. When I talked to my father he seemed to think it was a linkage or throttle problem. Either way it is occuring only two days after having it returned and paying just underf $2000 in repairs for a gasket problem and a rear pinnion that was leaking. He thought that it was somehting the shop had done and that they would fix it. God I hope so. In the past 3 weeks I have spent nearly $3000 in repairs on what was initially a $4000 car.

If Things Were Perfect

One down and one to go.

I returned to campus today and spoke with the other History instructor that I needed a cutcard from. Initially he was hesitant to let me in. But, when I explained I was a graduating senior and that the lecture based World History Since 1500 conflicted with another essential class, Bio, he relented and cut me in. I had to wait outside the department office for the department secretary to return. Initially I had to wait for the cut card. However, the instructor came by and opened the office so I could fill out the card and he could sign off on it. Then I ended up having to wait for the department secretary so that I could have her sign off on the card so I could add the class via online registration - which explains why I am up so late Blogging. After dealing with the History department I had to go straight to work and that meant waiting until 3am to access Goldlink so I could (1) add the World History class I was just permitted into and (2) find out the total that I owe the school tomorrow. . . well, today now. I mean Friday. Sheesh!

Look's Like I'm Up Shit Creek Again

Another round of talking to advisors. First I went to see the undergrad dean of the English department. I needed him to fill out some paperwork for graduation. Also, I needed his permission to take an overload, 20 hours, so that I could squeeze in everything I need this semester so I can graduate in May. Usually this guy is not the person students want to go talk to. However, I have to say that he was in a good mood and did everything I needed him to do. I then headed off to the student center to talk to the dean of the department to have final approval for the overload. Apparently today was also a day for orientation for new students. The dean seemed oblivious to the fact that I was a senior seeking an overload in order to graduate. He wanted me to go through all the stations for Freshmen orientation. He also suggested I go talk to Dr. Burgess in the history department since one of the classes I wanted to add (History of Rome) was being taught by him and he was in his office today.

So I head over to the history department. While waiting for a student already in his office to finish up I notice a sign posted next to his door that states something to the effect that: there number of students seeking cut cards into the History of Rome equals 150% of the students taking the class and that it is impossible to teach a writing intensive class to 50 students. It went on to say that only seniors that can produce their graduation audit would be cut.

Great!

The student leaves and now it's my turn. I tel lhim I noticed his posting about the History of Rome, but that I qualify since I am a graduating senior and that I need to take the History of Rome since it is a writing intensive class. He inquires if I am a history major. Relectunatly I admit that I am not, but that I am a history minor. He feints with a comment, after looking up my records, that I can take any writing intensive class since I have the two in my major. I explain that I need to take the class because it doubles up my requirement for a writing intensive and a 3-4000 history class. He squirms and tells me about his teaching load this semester and would rather that I try to cut into American Revolution since that instructor is only teaching half as many classes. He told me that if this othr instructor won't let me in then we can "negotiate". Whateverthehell that means.

I walk over to this other instructor's office but he's not there. I head by the admin building on the way to my car and pick up a spring schedule since I've misplaced mine. As I walk I glance through the schedule to see when American Revolution is taught to get an idea of what my schedule would look like. I have to do a double take. This class contradicts with another of my history classes. So far I have 9 hours, but I need to cut in World Since After 1500 as well as History of Rome or American Revolution. Why one of these two? Because the history department only offers two writing intensive courses at the 3-4000 level. Can you believe this?

So now I'm back to where I was before seeing Burggess. If I get into American Revolution then I need to drop my Asian History and that'll mean cutting into another 4,000 level history class besides American Revolution. Sheesh. Well, I needed to go back tomorrow and see about cutting into the internet taught World Civ - The lecture based class conflicts with the only day time biology class. Hopefully I can go back tomorrow and talk to Burgess and "negotiate" something with him.

This whole ordeal is one big headache.
