10 Years After

My return to college

Friday the Thirteenth!
Man, it was hard to concentrate in British Lit today. We wrapped up Wordsworth and started on Samuel Taylor Coleridge. I find that Coleridge joined the military under the alias of Silas Tomkyn Comerbacke fascinating. We barely started discussion of the first Coleridge poem, Eolian Harp, and the instructor has already handed out the reading list for the next poet. Not that I am complaining. I wish we had a syllabus that contained the reading list for the whole semester. Another wish would be for a faster pace. Maybe if he wouldn't read the poems to the class that we were already suppose to have read on our own. Except, of course, for particularly relevant portions. I'm curious to see what the format of the tests in this class will be.

I Left My Wallet In El Segundo

Argh! I left my wallet at home this morning. Wouldn't it figure that the day I decide to buy a beverage while on campus I have no money? What's worse, I have to figure out what to do about clocking in at work. Hopefully I can phone my parents and get them to read me the number off of my badge.

American Government went well today. The interesting part was talking about Liberals and Conservatives. I feel for one guy in the class that is outwardsly conservative. You can see him squirm when something he disagrees with is said. Next to me sits a redneck marine that has to engage the Professor with a personal conversation. Which wouldn't be that bad except that his points are ridiculously juvenile. A marine and he can't comprehend why the Department of Defense can't act on the American population without martial law being declared ("...but I took an oath to defend this country from enemies domestic and foriegn.")

On a brighter note, I went to the Philosophy Club meeting last night. It was their first meeting of the year and I think I will join. Things will be tight though. They are planning 2 meetings a month, one for business matters and one for actual discussion of philosophy. I might be able to get by with attending the latter and skipping the former. It isn't as though I want to be an officer anyways. What was really cool was the GA in my World Civ class was there. After the meeting I was like a fanboy talking to him. We discussed the instructor for my World Civ and then a whole slew of topics that had been brewing in my mind. He's a very interesting guy.

Well, that's been my day so far. Now off to read some more about Wordsworth's poetry for my paper on nature in his works.

Transparency of Technology
I was using a microcassette recorder In British Lit . The first thing to go wrong was that I fat-fingered the buttons on it while the professor was taking roll. Good going. Then, after the instructor talked about one of the Wordsworth poems, I noticed that the reel wasn't moving on the tape. Frustrated I picked it up and shut it off. A few minutes later I looked over it and, after adjusting a few options (1/2 speed, f.play, etc.) I switched it back on. Still didn't look like it was going, despite the red light being on (which it was the first time, too.). I just let it run. Then, as I pack up to leave class I notice how slow the tape reel moves on the cassette. Yep, it had been recording the first time when I switched it off. Just great.Well, at least I was taking notes and not relying on the tape.

System of a Down

3 things. First, the internet connection I use at home has been down for a week. It was a bootleg account from an ISP I worked for years ago. No big deal, just an incentive to get DSL (again). The second thing was that the computers here in the library were impossible to use yesterday. Most of them were being used by a class which was meeting here. Those that weren['t in use by them weren't being used because they were not functioning. When your only option to troubleshoot these kiosk things is to reboot them it doesn't leave you with a high success rate. Thirdly, this is the second time I've had to type this in. I fat-fingered the keyboard and opened up the side pane to view the browser's history and lost all the text I was blogging.

Like school in summer time...

No class today for British Lit. The professor had a doctor's appointment. So I spent the morning at home studying for a gigantic Spanish quiz. There are about 70 words and phrases that I have to know. I have them all down pat except for half a dozen phrases. However, I think I can get them under the pressure of the quiz. Well, off to study for a few more minutes before class begins....

Next time.... Students with dyed hair.
